The U.S. actor is back playing real life paranormal investigator Ed Warren in The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case, three years after the first flick scared cinemagoers. While the 42-year-old has carved out a career in the horror arena, with two Insidious flicks also under his belt, Patrick has also sensed the surreal away from work.

“Unrelated to these movies, I’ve heard people on two different occasions say they’ve heard kids’ laughter in the middle of the night, in my house,” he confessed to independent.co.uk. “And that used to freak my wife out.”

When researching for The Conjuring flicks, Patrick asked the late Ed’s wife Lorraine (played by Vera Farmiga) about the children’s laughter.

“She said, ‘Sometimes kids’ spirits want to play,’” he revealed.

This wasn’t the only incident to blight the cast; during shooting for the 2013 original, actress Joey King experienced a scare of her own. Describing the situation as “weird” Patrick recalls the now 16-year-old star, who was playing the daughter of a family living in a house that was haunted, developing bruises all over here body. As a teenager, Joey didn’t partake in any stunts or “get hit by anything” so that couldn’t be blamed. In the film, Joey’s on-screen mum Carolyn (Lili Taylor) wakes up with similar marks.

“Of course, I didn’t say that, but it was looming in the air,” Patrick remembered. “It went away towards the end of shooting; never had it since, never had it before. She’s all good. But it was weird. It seems like a good thing to talk about during press for a movie, but I didn’t do it then because I’m a parent and I wouldn’t just make light of someone. I saw the fear on her face. You literally see this little girl going, ‘I don’t know.’”
