NAOMI CAMPBELL thinks the key to modelling is being open to transformation.

The 45-year-old supermodel has been flying high since breaking into the industry big time during the 1990s, boasting jobs for the likes of Azzedine Alaia and Vivienne Westwood on her resume. With such a poignant and groundbreaking career under her belt, including being the first black model to cover French Vogue, it’s no surprise Naomi has documented her work and personal life in a self-titled tome, covering everything from her early beginnings to iconic photoshoots.

“There have been many shifts, I think,” she told of her livelihood, posing for photographers such as Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. “Of course, life has to evolve and business has to evolve, and I’m really lucky and, again, grateful that I’ve beMarcus Piggotten able to evolve with those times. (As a model) I think pure honesty is just being open to being transformed and not trying to control how people visually see me.

“You have to trust the photographers you work with, and they’ll make you into the vision that they want. I’m open to that. For me, that’s the part I love. It makes me enthusiastic to say, ‘How are you going to shoot me now? You’ve known me since I was 16. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen.’”

Naomi’s book is out on Thursday (07Apr16), and she also describes her life as an “open book” thanks to her outspoken nature and frankness. Her personality has become just as popular as her striking looks and has landed her plenty of big opportunities over the years.

Along with French Vogue, Naomi graced the cover of iconic American Vogue in 1989 for Anna Wintour’s first ever September issue. Naomi still remembers how shocked she was to be given the job, especially as again she was the first black model to grace the publication’s flagship issue.

“I’m very proud of this cover to this day,” she said of the photo, in which she rocks an orange sequined jacket, matching trousers and pearl beads.
