KIM BASINGER has signed on to play literary anti-hero Christian Grey’s former lover and business partner in the upcoming FIFTY SHADES OF GREY sequel.

The Oscar winner will play Elena Lincoln, in the ongoing film adaptations of author E.L. James’ erotic novel trilogy.

Basinger joins Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, who will reprise their respective roles of Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker. Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini are also returning to the cast.

Dakota Johnson can’t wait to get started on the sequel, telling Access Hollywood, “We’re gonna start filming that soon… I think it’s gonna be exciting to go back and develop characters further. The story is sort of like a thriller now, and it gets kinda scary. It’s awesome.”

But she’s not looking forward to baring all for the cameras again: “It never is comfortable to be seen like that…,” she adds, “because it’s not in a private, or intimate environment.”

James Foley will take charge of the sequel after Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson stepped down amid reports of creative differences with author James.

Foley is set to shoot both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed back-to-back, with production starting this spring (16).

Meanwhile, it’s set to be a very busy year for Basinger – she also appears in her L.A. Confidential co-star Russell Crowe’s new movie The Nice Guys.
