Comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele star in the action comedy as friends who set out on a mission to rescue their stolen kitten, named after The Matrix actor, by posing as drug dealers for a street gang.

And director Peter Atencio tells the Los Angeles Times the comedians were hesitant to approach Reeves and ask him to be part of the project, because his hit action film John Wick had a similar storyline – the actor plays an assassin seeking vengeance against mobsters who kill his dog.

Pressure from studio bosses prompted Atencio to put out the offer, but he says the actor’s team “politely declined”. It wasn’t until February (16) when the first official trailer was released that Reeves seriously considered being part of the film.

“We got a call after the trailer came out,” Atencio recalls. “Apparently, his sister showed him the trailer and said, ‘Hey, you gotta see this. You’re gonna love this!’ He flipped out and got in touch with us directly to say, ‘If there’s anything I can do, let’s make this work’.”

At the time, the film was almost finished and about to premiere at the South by Southwest festival in Texas, but Atencio managed to include the real Keanu at the last minute.

Ironically, Reeves was filming John Wick 2 in Italy at the time, so he recorded his kitten dialogue from a studio in Rome, and Atencio added his voice to a scene, in which the feline Keanu helps guide Peele’s character through a drug trip.

Atencio also made it a point to assure Reeves they weren’t out to make a mockery of him, adding, “He wanted to talk to me before he agreed to make sure that wasn’t the case. So I told him about the movie and talked him through the story.”

Keanu hits cinemas in the U.S. on Friday (29Apr16).
