KATY PERRY has compared using Twitter to battling a laser maze.

The 31-year-old opened up about the power of social media in a new interview, where she explained how difficult it is nowadays to use sites like Twitter and Instagram without offending anyone, or being attacked.

“I think everyone feels a little on edge saying anything. Sometimes you feel like you have to read all the news before you can say anything…” she told Mashable.com.

“I feel like I have the power with one button to speak with so many people and be connected with people all over the world at the snap of you (sic) finger. It’s a powerful tool,” she added.

“But when you have a lot to lose you get a bit careful because the bigger you are the harder you fall. So you just kind of have to learn how to bob and weave. I think the whole world has become a little on edge over what you can and cannot say. And it’s not just me, it’s anyone,” the Rise hitmaker explained.

Katy recently surpassed 90 million followers on Twitter, and said she was using the platform to bring awareness to DonorsChoose, a new project that helps the education system in America. She has teamed up with office supply chain store Staples to help raise $1 million (£765,000) to help fund teachers and improve classrooms across the country.

“I have a lot of spotlight, and that’s why I do things like this. I just need to refocus the spotlight on things that need it. The education system in America is not brilliant, and hopefully that will change soon,” Katy shared.

“But right now we don’t put enough importance into it, and a lot of teachers are having to dip into their own pockets. Education is so important for kids, especially in those formative years,” she added.
