Singer CARRIE UNDERWOOD transformed her figure after mean American Idol viewers called her “fat”.

The 33-year-old won the fourth season of the hit singing competition in 2005 but victory was bittersweet – as it turned her into a target for Internet ‘trolls’.

“Back when I was on American Idol, I was a bit heavier than I am now,” she told Us Magazine. “That was the first time I was exposed to the public talking about me, so it was impossible not to look online and see what they were saying. Apparently I was fat. Of course I wasn’t, but sometimes words people choose are not the nicest.”

The comments hurt initially, but then Carrie decided to take a long hard look at herself and use the criticism to drive her towards a new health goal, taking up exercise and overhauling her diet in a bid to get in shape.

“I feel much better now at 33 than I did when I was 20 because I take better care of myself,” she added.

In fact, Carrie has now adopted a full vegan diet and she has designed a full-body mobile gym she can use when she’s touring.

Her dedication to leading a healthier lifestyle also helped the star get back in shape quickly after the birth of her first child with husband Mike Fisher in February last year (15), but she insists her body has never 100 per cent recovered from pregnancy.

“There are things that are never going to go back – let’s face it,” she said. “I am starting over with a new set of rules. But that said, at this point in my life, I have more of a shot at having abs. I feel like I have been working 10 years to have abs, so I am on the verge of real, you-can-count-them ones.”
